Serious Pie is the casual dining hotspot in local restauranteur Tom Douglas’s…shall I say Super Block of restaurants. Notorious for opening restaurants all within a one or two block radius (so he could walk from one restaurant to the next), Tom Douglas is the man who can seemingly do no wrong in the local food scene. My personal favourite, Serious Pie, serves up authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas, with a locavore twist. Many, if not most ingredients are either made in-house (fennel sausage, other house-cured meats) or supplied by local foragers.
Serious Pie describes itself as “a pizzeria with a bread baker’s soul, serving up pies with blistered crusts, light textured with just enough structure and bite. Our attentiveness to each pizza in the 600F stone-encased applewood burning oven preserves the character of house made charcuterie and artisan cheeses from around the world.” They definitely get the crust right; cooked to perfection with a light sprinkling of flake salt around the perimeter to finish. The best part is that the center of each pie remains crispy, and doesn’t get all soggy and floppy when you pick up each piece.
Perhaps the best part about it all is Serious Pie’s Happy hour, daily from 3:00-5:00pm. All pizzas on their regular menu are cooked up in a smaller size for $6 a piece. When most items go for anywhere from $15 to $21 per pizza, this deal can’t be beat. Plus it allows a group to order nearly one of each kind, to be shared around. Below are a selection of my favourites from their menu. My #1 pick EVERY time will always be the roasted mushroom with truffle cheese. As someone who until recently didn’t necessarily like mushrooms, this is the pizza that made me start liking them. So you know it’s good if it turns a hater into a fanatic.
