Molly Moon’s | Seattle, WA

Molly Moon’s is another one of those places you can walk by 1,000 times and never go in, but a perfect opportunity comes up and you just have to say “screw it, let’s do this.” That opportunity came up for me a week ago, on a rare sunny day in Seattle, with nothing better to do but wander the streets of Capitol Hill and see what was going on. Because my hobbies are lame and consist of looking up restaurants, reading menus, and browsing new recipe ideas, I had come across Molly Moon’s many times and made a mental note of giving it a shot.

Molly Moon’s Capitol Hill location is just north of Seattle University on Pine and 11th, and to be quite honest I have no idea why I haven’t been here many times before. It’s a fun little shop making delicious homemade ice cream, and their gimmick is churning out (get it? Churning?) quirky flavours like strawberry balsamic and salted caramel.

I went for a scoop of Earl Grey and a scoop of Honey Lavender, thinking they would compliment each other well as one melted into the other. The Earl Grey itself was a bit of a letdown, but don’t get me wrong, the ice cream base they use is rich and delicious. However, if I’m going to eat tea flavoured ice cream, I want a heavy hit of black tea and bergamot that I expect Earl Grey to carry. This seemed like vaguely tea flavoured vanilla ice cream. However, the flavour it did have really complimented the honey lavender, which was everything I had anticipated it would be. The sweetness of the honey, elevating the aromatic floral notes of lavender, really felt like something else entirely on the palate. I love lavender when added to every day food items, and this was no exception.

I think next time I go (and there will be a next time), I’ll try the strawberry balsamic as it definitely caught my eye.
