Fol Epi bakery is my kryptonite. All of their ingredients are organic when possible and they even grind their flours on site! Their bread is amazing and their baguette is the closest thing I’ve had to real good quality French bread outside of Paris, it’s the perfect combination of airy yet chewy bread with a crispy crust. I can also go on and on about their Macarons (the chocolate one is heavenly), their eclairs, their canelé, and pretty much everything else in the store. The one item I’m not over the moon about are their croissants.
Anyways today I enjoyed one of their made-to-order personal sized pizzas. These are served at lunch time from 12pm-2pm everyday except Saturday and they have a variety of interesting flavour combinations such as the jalapeno, apple and cheese pizza I had today ($8). I once had a chef tell me that Fol Epi has the best pizza in Victoria and yes it’s true I would have to agree with him 100%. Zambris has a great pizza crust but their toppings are lacking and Prima Strada has flavourful toppings but their dough tends to get a little soggy and lacks chew. Fol Epi has it all. The crust of my pizza was perfectly crispy yet chewy and the toppings were bold in flavour. There was a generous amount of thick and flavourful tomato sauce on my pizza, a few zesty (not too spicy) jalapeno slices and a bit of cheese (not so much that is seemed greasy). For the price I think this is an excellent deal for a quick lunch. The one downfall though is the seating. If it’s a dry day then there’s plenty of seating outside along with a beautiful view of Victoria’s inner harbour, but on one of our frequent rainy days then seating is limited. Even though it’s a little on the messy side these pizzas are available to-go or if you’re feeling brave you could order some raw pizza dough and attempt it yourself. I tried and failed though so I leave it to the experts.
