Since writing this review we have heard that Sushi Wara has since changed owners and no longer has the top quality sushi that it used to have. We have not been back since they have changed owners but if we do we will update our review accordingly.
This is officially one of my most favorite sushi restaurants on the island (including Victoria). My boyfriend had a craving for seaweed salad on one of our ferry rides back to Nanaimo so we turned to Trip Advisor and stumbled upon Sushi Wara in Ladysmith. This was 6 months ago and we’ve been going back every chance we get, sometimes we’ll even make excuses to head up island just so we can stop in for some sushi.
It’s their quality and attention to detail that sets Sushi Wara apart from the others. The sashimi for example is extremely fresh, tender, served not too cold and perfectly cut into uniform sized pieces. All these are little details often overlooked or disregarded at other sushi restaurants. Sushi Wara has an extensive menu from appetizers such as their famous deep fried fish balls to giant lobster rolls (which contains a whole small lobster tail) to noodle dishes all at reasonable prices. The service has always been friendly and efficient and the presentation once again demonstrates their attention to detail as sushi is served on beautiful pottery dishes finished off with delicate garnishes.
We started with the crab sunomono salad which I feel was a little over priced for the small amount of crab you get. Then we had one of their special rolls with spicy tuna, a black dragon roll, albacore tuna and sockeye salmon sashimi and some nigiri all of which were excellent! I even ordered the chopped scallop roll, real crab California roll and lobster roll to go. I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to only eat sustainable sushi lately and I’m so glad that this place has lots of sustainable options to choose from.
I can’t give enough praise to this place. I just wish they had a location in Victoria!
