Kallayanee’s Kitchen – Thai Cooking Class

I really enjoy Thai food but cooking it has always been a daunting thought as I feel my pantry isn’t well equipped enough to be able to put something authentic together. I first heard about Kallayanee’s Thai cooking classes from a friend of mine who described it as “the best Thai food [they’ve] ever eaten!”. I put the idea on the back burner for a while until I had to think of a gift idea for my Mom’s birthday. I booked my class through Panorama Recreation Center but I believe you can book directly through them by calling or emailing too (info below).

What I loved most about Kallayanee’s classes is that there were so many different ones to choose from each one focusing on about 4-5 different dishes from a curry class, to vegetarian, to desserts etc. Taking a crash course on cooking Pad Thai and Tom Yum Soup is great but if you want more variety then those options are available too. As a crab lover I signed us up for a class which covered curry crab, corn fritters, pineapple fried rice, eggplant with snow peas, and ground pork salad and the cost is $55/pp.

The class takes place at her house in North Saanich near the Victoria Airport. Her kitchen space is cozy yet large enough for everyone to be able to have a good view and even help participate in the prep. Kallayanee and her assistant were really friendly, knowledgeable, approachable, and humorous. The recipes were easy to follow along with and we were able to ask questions and taste along the way. After all the cooking was complete we sat down as a group to enjoy our delicious meal. All the food was amazing and each had such a unique flavour from the next. My favorite was definitely the corn fritters and I can’t wait to make them at home.

For $55 these classes are a great value for money as you get to enjoy a full authentic Thai meal while learning some great skills and knowledge along the way. If you prefer Kallayanee also offers private classes for groups of 6 or more but I believe these spots fill up fast. I can’t wait to take another class soon and I would highly recommend this to anyone whether you’re a novice or an expert with Thai cooking.
