Craftsman and Wolves (Rebel Within) | San Francisco, CA

I’ve been meaning to go to Craftsman and Wolves (C&W) for a while, but I’m never in the Mission during the day time much. C&W is a patisserie style bakery serving up some pretty intricate and innovative pastries. I first heard about them when a coworker of mine talked about a famous breakfast muffin they have that is aptly named “Rebel Within”. It is a soft boiled egg (still runny inside) encased in a savoury muffin with sausage, chives and asiago cheese on top. These babies tend to sell out very early in the morning.

I had an opportunity to go in the morning after I scarfed down my Double Pain Au Chocolate from Tartine and packed one for a snack or lunch. At $7 a pop, these things don’t really come cheap.

Sadly by the time I got around to eating a few hours later, the contents of my bag crushed the muffin and caused some big time yolk leakage! A little bit unfortunate, but it was still good to eat.

Overall, it’s a pretty good muffin/scone/biscuit. My tastes would like it to be more savoury and I found it a little bit on the ‘safer’ or blander side. The egg inside is a real novelty. But aside from that… that’s kind of it and a little bit underwhelming after you get over the sheer coolness of the breakfast pastry.

If you haven’t had it, definitely try it out. It’s good, but it’s more of a one time thing in my opinion though… unless you happen to really really love it.
