Cafe Bunn Mi | San Francisco, CA

I find the more longer I live in San Francisco, the more appreciation I start gaining for food around my neighbourhood of Richmond. It’s good Asian food around here and it is a) cheap b) no lineups/long-ass-waits generally speaking. These two points are starting to influence my dining decisions around the city. I think I’m going back to basics, back to a simpler time where food is just honest good food with no flourishes or gimmicks. Cafe Bunn Mi seems to fit the bill as one of those places.

I was fancying some Bahn Mi so I’d thought I’d Yelp it and find what’s around. Great reviews of this place came around. It’s a very small restaurant and no frills. Bahn Mi prices were around 5-7 dollars which is perfect. When I asked for what was the most popular sandwich and the clerk said “Pork Belly” and “Crispy Duck” I was convinced I came to the right place already! I love deep fried duck, so I ordered that and a strawberry shake.

The bahn mi that came was a nice portion. It’s not too big, and not too small and was definitely meaty. The bun was nice, toasty and warm. The fillings were your standard mayo, cilantro, pickled veggies. It was a solid sandwich. Though I must say, they were definitely generous with their jalapeno peppers and I had to take them out because I simply couldn’t handle the heat. I do like jalapenos in my Bahn Mi though, but they have to be thoroughly seeded. It adds that extra dimension of flavour without your tongue on fire.

The shake was good as well, but I should’ve had it on a hotter day.

All in all, solid place. I would definitely come back here again!
